2011 Le Bel Homme (The Plan) Excerpt – In the Library
(in the library)
THE world around you reflected, or you around the world: the entirety of culture and custom was an overripe fruit, gnat-flies zipped around like vulture drops. The law increased crime; prosperity impoverished, plenty laid waste, increased populations isolated ever more populi, food became poison, freedoms synonymized with vice, civilization barbarized, nationalism again embraced xenophobia, albeit more discreetly, and the most destructive things became the most worshiped. Yet worship was no longer recognized as such; what were called worships (war ship) were the ritualized effluvia of guilt and responsibility handed down weekly or otherwise in silent (team player) support of the real worship of the worst of things. There were many sides, many countries, many faiths and persuasions but no longer could any be singled out as bad or any as good; it was demons versus demons all the way down. To the base of culture, systemically, the rot spread. And they must have known like you knew, as you knew enough to know that you were not special. Yet they knew as a princess knows she must shit. On a sunny day, you were in a windowless, fluorescent hall.
