They have been nipping and the wolf has been stalking. That has been the whole story. It’s just that now no one keeps the dogs busy and no one lies to you about the wolf. The serious business of maintenance bares its ugly weight upon your back at last. Maintain your teeth. Maintain your smell. Maintain your clothing. Maintain your transportation. Maintain your shelter. Maintain your nutritional intake. Maintain your health, your relationships, your community, your computer, your hot water heater, your debts. If you do not, they will maintain you right into the ground. One foot is in the ground already. One foot is in the ground beyond already. Your foot has been in the ground this whole time. The ground is what you came out of. The ground is what you will return to. Midway through life you doubt if you can take one good step. The ground is a jealous mother, and holds on for your dear life. The easiest way is to grab onto someone else’s foot. The easiest way is to nip at someone else’s heals. The easiest way is to stalk and hunt another. But you would just be giving them to the ground. And the ground is your enemy. Your enemy will not let you go, and even if you feed it multitudes, it is not beyond eating its helpful spoon. After all, since everything comes out of it, it’s only been eating itself this whole time.
